Air Portal Project

This South Coast creative studio, fronted by Wirral born John McFaul, is no stranger to column inches these days. With their impressive array of clients including Virgin Atlantic, IBM, Toshiba, Vodafone, Orange, Nike, Adidas, Carhartt, Casio, Specsavers and Havaianas, to name but a substantial bulky handful, they have made quite a name for themselves these past few years. Their work is constantly pushing creative boundaries...and obviously tickling the fancy of those 'in the know' as they are gaining an ever increasing Global audience with admirers and collectors now Worldwide. With heads firmly in the 'ooh', lush, lovely and graphic they positively encourage a challenge whatever the media.

Represented now in London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Dubai they are reluctantly recognized as amongst the 'zeitgeist' of UK contemporary graphic practice. Reluctant they may be in this bumbling 'zeitgeist' guise...they simply carry on flinging down that creative gauntlet and pushing their work right across that graphic spectrum.

In recognition that JLA is now a true gateway to the region, the North West Development Agency (NWDA) funded a programme of tourism branding and information works at the Airport as part of a £1.6m series of airport enhancements. The focus being the additional numbers of European visitors expected to travel via the Airport during Liverpool's European Capital of Culture Year in 2008.

Called the 'Air Portal Initiative' the NWDA project divides into eight 'creatively-led' deliverables which collectively look to prepare the airport to 'Welcome' visitors and provide them with a memorable visitor experience. Under the creative supervision of Broome Jenkins design consultants, and with creative input from specialist sub-consultants: McFaul and River Media, the project has involved over a dozen suppliers. With the primary focus on arriving visitors receiving a positive 'first impression' of Liverpool and the North West of England, a journey through the region has been told in a unique and illustrative way.

The McFaul creative team has created over 300 linear metres of unique artwork which runs along glazed arrivals routes and replicated on columns in the baggage reclaim area. All seven of the Airport Transfer buses are also 'wrapped' in the same designs.
