Although technically JLA is a state-of-the-art building, throughout the terminal are limestone slabs containing fossils of creatures that lived up to 250 million years ago! The limestone at JLA is from near the small town of Solnhofen in South Germany. Since so many of the slabs contain wonderful examples of fossils, a leaflet called Fossil Mystery Tour has been produced showing where to find some of the best examples and gives information on each of the fossil types: Ammonites, Belemnites and Trace Fossils.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport worked closely with local geologist Joe Crossley to produce the guide and would like to thank him for his hard work and support.
Joe Crossley, said: "It has been quite fantastic and most enjoyable to research the exotic continental fossils at JLA, because they are such superb fossils, so very well preserved, and beautifully displayed in the polished limestone slabs which not only floor the entire concourse but also adorn the walls. The fossils are particularly interesting because they give such a vivid insight into our world around 250 million years ago."
