Why you should go

As one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland, Poznan is the perfect place for a weekend break, whether you’re travelling as a couple, family or with friends. The Old Town in Poznan is an absolute must-see; on the banks of the Warta River, the beautiful Old Market is right in the heart of the city centre. From awe-inspiring architecture to sculptures and numerous historical artefacts adorning the streets, the Old Town is the perfect place to explore, as well as grab a bite to eat.

Malta Lake is also worth visiting, particularly during the summer months; located next to one of the two zoos in Poznan, Malta Lake is the perfect place to go and chill out in the sunshine. Aside from the exciting summer toboggan run, there is skiing, tree climbing and other fun activities available at the lake for everyone to get involved in.

If you are visiting during late June, make sure you get involved in the Kupala night; every year on the shortest day of the year, thousands of lanterns are released into the sky in Poznan. Summers in Poznan also include the Malta Theatre Festival, happening in late June and July; it takes place across a number of venues in the city including theatres, parks and squares. If you’re a bit of a culture vulture and visiting at a different time of year, make sure you check out on of the Philharmonic Orchestra’s classical music concerts at the University Hall.

Where you should stay

Poznan is a city filled with affordable B&Bs, chic boutique apartments and luxurious hotels; no matter where you want to stay, there is somewhere to suit all styles and budgets. Some of the most highly recommended hotels include the Sheraton Poznan Hotel, the Mercure Poznan Centrum and the Hotel NH Poznan.

Don’t miss!

  • Mechanical billy goats – in the Old Market Square you’ll find a clock in the Town Hall where the billy goats appear every day when the clock strikes noon. One tourists absolutely have to see!
  • Ride the Maltakna – by the northern shore of the Malta Lake, the Maltanka train takes passengers all the way to the New Zoo. An absolute favourite with the kids – and big kids alike!
  • National Museum – there are countless pieces of art to be admired here, but most famously Poland’s only Claude Monet, “La Plage à Pourville, Soleil Couchant”. It was returned to the museum in 2010 after being stolen in 2000.
