Located on the banks of the River Oder, Wrocław is a beautiful city comprising 12 islands and 130 bridges. There has been a settlement at this location since the 6th Century, but now Wrocław is the largest city in western Poland and was awarded both European Capital of Culture and World Book Capital in 2016.

When you should go to Wrocław
The best time of year to visit Wrocław depends on your personal preferences. July and August are the warmest months of the year and are therefore very popular. If you’d like warm temperatures and to make the most of the long summer days, we recommend June. May and September are great times to visit to avoid peak tourist season. If you don’t mind colder weather, October-April can be a lovely time to visit with good value deals.
Where to stay in Wrocław
If you’re looking to be right in the centre of Wrocław, we recommend the Old Town (Stare Miasto). Not only is this a very convenient area to stay with a range of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, it is also the oldest part of the city with colourful tenement houses and cobblestone streets. There is so much to explore in this area including the Old Market Square (Rynek), the colourful Salt Market (Plac Solny), and the Jewish Quarter which houses one of the largest synagogues in Poland, the White Stork Synagogue.
For a more alternative stay, you can try Nadodrze, a hotspot for arts and culture. Take a wander through this area of Wrocław and see some incredible art, both on street murals and in galleries. It’s a great place to shop, eat and drink with cute independent shops, cool coffee shops and delicious street food.
The eastern districts of Biskupin and Sępolno are great for families or people who want to stay away from the buzz of the city centre. Surrounded by green space and in close proximity to major attractions such as the Japanese Gardens, Centennial Hall and Wrocław Zoo, these areas offer an alternative, more peaceful stay.

What to see and do in Wrocław
- Old Market Square
In the heart of the Old Town is the impressive Old Market Square (Rynek). With a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants, it’s a great place to socialise. You can also marvel at stunning architecture including merchants’ houses, two Baroque houses known as Jaś i Małgosia (Hansel and Gretel) and of course, the Town Hall. Built between the 13th and 16th Centuries, this Gothic Old Town Hall (Stary Ratusz) is a hodgepodge of architectural styles as new parts were added to it over a period of 250 years. It’s an absolute must-see! - Cathedral Island
Dating back to the 10th Century, Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) is the oldest part of the city. It has incredible architecture including the Gothic Cathedral of St John the Baptist and the Church of the Holy Cross. It is also home to the Archdiocese Museum which exhibits the Henrykowska Book from the 13th-14th Century, containing what’s considered to be the first sentence ever written in Polish. While on the island, make sure to see the Lamplighter, dressed in a cloak, who lights the 103 gas lamps every night. - Panorama of the Battle of Racławice
This 15 x 114 metre canvas depicting General Tadeusz Kościuszko's victory over the Russian forces at Racławice in 1794 took just over nine months to complete. Wrapped around the inside of a cylinder-shaped building, its immersive effect is magnified by the use of special lighting effects and 3D objects, making you feel as if you’re right in the middle of the battle.
