Duty Free, Customs & VAT Refunds


Duty Free

Passengers may take on board liquid items of any size that are purchased in the Departure Lounge after security, however, please note that airlines usual baggage rules regarding the number of items of hand luggage permitted on the aircraft may still apply.

To purchase Duty Free items, you will be asked to show your boarding card.

Duty Free or similar purchases will be given to you in a sealed bag. Do not open this bag until you have reached your final destination. You should also retain your proof of purchase throughout your journey. You will be required to show it at all transfer points.

Customs Allowances

Passengers arriving in to the UK must clear Customs, either by passing through the green "Nothing to Declare" channel or the red "Something to Declare" channel.

Passengers with goods purchased within the limits set out below should pass through the green "Nothing to Declare" channel. Passengers who have purchased goods in excess of the allowances listed below must pass through the red "Something to Declare" channel.

Good bought IN the EU:

  • 3200 cigarettes
  • 200 cigars
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 3kg of smoking tobacco
  • 100 litres of beer
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 20 litres of fortified wine

Goods bought OUTSIDE the EU:

  • 200 cigarettes
  • 50 cigars
  • 100 cigarillos
  • 250 grams of tobacco
  • 2 litres of still table wine
  • 1 litre of spirit or strong liquors over 22% volume
  • 2 litres of wine or other liquors
  • 250ml of eue de toilette
  • 60ml of perfume
  • £145 worth of goods including gifts and souvenirs

Passengers are advised that Customs officials may carry out random spot checks.

Transit and Transfer Passengers

LiverpooI John Lennon Airport does not operate as a transit airport.

If you arrive at Liverpool John Lennon Airport with the intention of departing the airport for another flight, you must collect your checked baggage from the carousel and clear Immigration and Customs, before proceeding to the Check-in Hall to check in for your next flight.

VAT Refunds

If you are a resident of a country outside the EU and wish to reclaim VAT on goods purchased in the UK, you shoud ask the retailer for a Global VAT Refund Form at the time of purchasing the items.

Once completed, the form can be submitted at the airport where Customs officials will collect it for processing. Provided the Customs official is satisfied that all requirements have been met, they will contact the retailer to arrange your VAT refund.

The Global VAT Refund Forms should be deposited in the red Global Refund post box located at Security.
