A port city on the Garonne River, Bordeaux is an ancient city with settlements as old as 300 BC. The historic part of the city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the area is also the world’s wine industry capital, with wine having been produced there since around the 8th Century. There are now 287,000 acres of vineyard, 10,000 wine producing châteaux and 13,000 grape growers in the region.
Classified as a City of Art and History, Bordeaux has one of Europe’s biggest 18th Century architectural urban areas, which is as popular with visitors as it is with film crews. It’s dominated by the Cathédrale St-André, which has sections dating back to 1096, but was mostly built in the 13th and 14th Centuries. It has a 50 metre high gothic belfry bedecked with gargoyles, affording spectacular views of the city. Also worth visiting is the Pallais Gallien – the ruins of a 3rd century amphitheatre.
For those after local food and drink, visit the Marché des Capuchins, a classic French market where you can have oysters and white wine from one of the many seafood stands. Bar du Vin in the Maison du Vin de Bordeaux, meanwhile, is the place to sample the region’s wine.
