“Why should I go to Girona?” we hear you asking! Well, you’re about to find out a number of reasons why this destination should be next on your travel list! With the help of Ryanair, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is now offering direct flights to this Catalonian city, so now is your chance to pack your bag and head on over. There’s no time to waste – book your trip with us today and you’ll be on your jollies before you know it.

Why you should go

From Roman roots to beautiful medieval buildings, Girona is a unique city which most definitely has a story to tell. Having been founded by Romans, ruled by Moors and becoming the hometown for an entire Jewish community, Girona is the gift that keeps on giving. If you’re looking for a city break destination that’s less tourist-ridden than the likes of Barcelona, then this is the perfect spot for you.

History lovers are set for a fantastic trip in Girona, with countless things to see and do. The best way to see what the city has to offer is on foot, so take a walk to the Jewish Quarter; otherwise known as ‘El Call’. You can also visit the extremely popular City History Museum on Carrer de la Força, where you can immerse yourself in its Roman and medieval heritage. If you simply want to take in the gothic architecture, spend some time roaming around the cobbled and characteristic streets, stopping off for a coffee along the way.

Another popular thing to do is to visit Girona Cathedral – showcasing some of the finest of religious interiors, you’re sure to be blown away when you set your eyes on it. If you’re looking to escape the tight-knit alleyways of the city centre, nature buffs should also try and visit Lake Banyoles, the largest natural lake in Girona.

When you should go

Checking the weather before visiting Girona is definitely advised, as this is a city which can experience a tropical climate. Warm summers and cool winters will determine what clothes you should bring! During spring, temperatures can reach around 22°C, whereas summers can peak at 30°C. Summer is the most popular time to visit for tourists, so if you want a less crowded trip, stay in the city during October.

Where you should stay

The beauty of Girona is that you can see most of the city by foot, so your hotel location won’t get in the way of your sightseeing. There are a number of accommodation options for a variety of budgets, but you could also look into staying in nearby Barcelona or Costa Brava.

Don’t miss!

Girona is full of hidden gems just waiting to be unveiled. Here’s some of our favourites that you must visit on your trip:

  • Passeig Arqueològic – This Archaeological Promenade has some of the most enchanting gardens and offers spectacular views of the city. Looking out over the colourful rooftops, this is a great location for a walk in the sunshine.
  • El Celler de Can Roca – If budget allows, why not try one of the World’s Best Restaurants with three-Michelin stars? Foodies should tick El Celler de Can Roca off their list and you’ll most definitely be in for a culinary treat.
  • Plaça de la Independència – Sit back and relax in the Plaça de la Independència and watch the hustle and bustle of the city go by. As a great people watching spot, you can make it that bit better with some tapas and a glass of red wine in hand.
