When you should go
Summer is primetime for holidays in Crete, with low rainfall, guaranteed sunshine and all attractions and restaurants ready to welcome travellers. But if you don’t like it quite so hot, the shoulder months of April, May, September and October are still pleasant, slightly quieter and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to soak up some rays.
The beaches: Sat in the warm waters of the Mediterranean, one of Crete’s biggest selling points is its collection of beautiful beaches. Malia, Matala and Elafonisi beaches are among the best on offer.
Heraklion Archaeological Musuem: Learn all about the ancient history and people of Crete at the Heraklion Archaeologial Museum. With frescoes, pottery, jewellery, weapons and sculptures dating back thousands of years, this is one culture lovers and history buffs are sure to love.
Samaria Gorge: Situated within the National Park of Samaria, Samaria Gorge is a hiking trail that cuts through the rugged White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of Crete, running 10 miles in length and ending at the shores of the Mediterranean. If you love nature, this is one of the island’s best spots, with sheer rock walls, wildflowers and incredible scenic views.
