Why you should go

Knock is a world renowned pilgrimage site which welcomes over 1.5 million visitors every year, with Knock Shrine being the location of an apparition in 1879. The Virgin Mary, Joseph and John the Evangelist appeared in front of 15 local villagers which was later confirmed by the Pope himself at the Vatican. Today, the area has a charming ambience with five churches and a museum proving top of tourist’s lists. If you fancy trying your luck at seeing an apparition for yourself, visit the Church of the Apparition which built on the same site as the original church.

We’d also recommend you take some time out to visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of Knock – this stunning spectacle is definitely worth a visit, housing striking architecture which is easy on the eye even for a non-religious person.

If you’re looking to get some fresh air into your lungs, Knock is the perfect destination to explore the great outdoors. Head towards Ballycroy National Park to see some of the most breathtaking views. For avid cyclists, you should take your bike along to the Great Western Greenway for a chance to take in the Atlantic coast on two wheels. Looking for a challenge? Tackle the Croagh Patrick hike and you’ll be rewarded with the view.

When you should go

The best time to visit Knock would be during the summer months with Knock Shrine having extended opening hours at this time and the longer days will mean more time enjoying the outdoors. Additionally, Knock is still as stunning during the winter.

Where you should stay

If you’re just looking to visit Knock Shrine, you’ll be able to find hotels within the village, but make sure you book in advance as they can get extremely busy. Within about 10km from Knock, you’ll find characteristic hotels and B&Bs overlooking the river in Claremorris.

Don’t miss!

Make sure you appreciate the beauty of Knock when you visit, but some other things you shouldn’t miss include:

  • Ashford Castle – about a 40 minute drive away you’ll find Ashford Castle where you can have dinner in an unlikely dungeon location.
  • Bertra Blue Flag beach – from kite-surfing to bird watching, Bertra beach is one of the finest in western Ireland and is a must see on your visit.
  • Hennigan’s Heritage Centre – take an interesting, historical tour of Tom Hennigan’s lost Irish heritage.
