When you should go
The best time to visit Kosice depends on what you’re visiting for. There are dozens of ski areas within driving distance of Kosice Airport and if you are planning to hit the slopes, then Slovakia’s ski season starts in December and runs until the end of April.
March-May is a wonderful time of year to head to Kosice if you are heading there for a city break, with temperatures pleasant enough that you should be able to enjoy your break without being uncomfortably hot.
St Elisabeth Cathedral: One thing you have to see in Kosice is the beautiful St Elisabeth Cathedral. Completed in the 16th century, it is the biggest cathedral in Slovakia and the easternmost Gothic Church in Europe. Its Bell Tower is also one of the city’s best vantage points, so don’t miss out if you want to view Kosice from above.
Singing Fountain: Between the cathedral and State Theatre, you’ll find a park with benches and a fountain that dances to the tune of a nearby 22-bell sculpture every hour. In summer, visit after sundown when multicoloured lights set the jets of water aglow.
Miklus Prison: This former prison is now a museum of medieval criminal law and justice, with exhibits on the city, crafts and trade. If you want to learn more about Kosice, this is definitely somewhere you should visit.
