Why you should go
The largest of all three Baltic capitals, Riga is a cultural and cosmopolitan hub. When you first arrive the city may seem quiet and peaceful, but when you start to explore you will discover the exciting and fast-paced energy of its bars, restaurants and modern art galleries. There’s a reason Riga won the European Capital of Culture Award in 2014!
The city’s Gothic buildings feature some of the oldest (and arguably most beautiful) architecture in Latvia, so during your visit, make sure you check out Riga Cathedral, Alberta Iela, the House of Blackheads and Riga Town Hall Square. Alternatively, you can see them all from the top of Saint Peter’s Church tower, which offers you a breath-taking view of the entire city.
Latvia is known for its incredible range of beers, so if you fancy yourself as a bit of a beer connoisseur, Riga is the city for you. Take a visit to the Old Town to sample a variety of the local beers whilst sitting in a quaint outdoor square, surrounded by medieval buildings; it looks and feels like something out of a fairy tale!
During the day time there are countless cultural experiences to be had across the city. History buffs will be left in awe by Riga’s huge collection of museums, including the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Latvian War Museum and the Latvian Museum of National History all located in the city centre. Fancy a night on the town? Before you hit Riga’s bars and clubs, why not take a trip to the Latvian National Opera or Latvian National Theatre? If you’re on a family trip with the kids, make sure you visit the Latvian State Puppet Theatre. No matter what’s on your list of things to do, you won’t be left twiddling your thumbs!
When you should go
Riga is a brilliant city-break destination all year round. The city gets warmer and more vibrant between April and September, but the winters are beautiful too – New Year’s Eve in Riga is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
Where you should stay
The two main areas are Old Riga and Central Riga, both of which are as convenient as one another. Old Riga is a stone’s throw away from all of the sightseeing spots, and if you stay in Central Riga you will literally be in the middle of everything that’s going on!
Whether you’re in Riga for just a few nights or a couple of weeks, make sure you make time to visit these hidden gems:
- Medus – take a trip to this speciality store and go shopping for anything and everything to do with bees. Who doesn’t want a full bee keeper’s outfit and some honey-based cosmetics?!
- Watch a movie – if you are caught off guard by some bad weather, take a trip to the cinema. Going to the movies in Riga is extremely cheap, so head down to the Alpha Mall for a couple of hours.
- Take to the water – boat trips on the Daugava River run hourly between May and September and will give you a glimpse of the romantic side of Riga.
