The architecture alone is worth a trip to Sofia; the city is over 6,000 years old, and as a result is home to Thracian, Roman and Ottoman remains, picturesque religious temples, Renaissance houses and modern, trendy buildings. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is unlike any building you will have ever seen before, and the Ivan Vazov National Theatre simply cannot be missed!
Sofia has developed into a modern, cosmopolitan city, yet the ancient history is still visible throughout the surrounding streets and nearby scenery. The incredibly beautiful Sredna Gora Mountain range surrounds the city, and Sofia sits within close range of the Vitosha Mountain – perfect if you fancy a day trip out of the hustle and bustle to do some country hiking. If you want to see something historical within the city itself, make sure you visit the Church of St. George, which was built by the Romans in the 4th century.
When you should go
Sofia’s summer generally tends to start during May and end during September, with mid-summer months averaging at around 30°C. Winters in Bulgaria’s capital tend to be very cold and snowy, so if you’re travelling at the beginning or end of the year, don’t forget to pack your coat, hat, scarf and gloves!
Where you should stay
The main street in Sofia is Vitosha Boulevard, so when searching for somewhere to stay, ensure you’re within walking distance of this area if possible. There are hotels, apartments and B&Bs to suit all styles and budgets throughout the city centre, so you won’t be short of somewhere to stay – just ensure you’re not too far out. If you are staying within walking distance of Vitosha Boulevard, it’s unlikely that you will need to use public transport at all during your stay.

- Visit Bitaka Flea Market – if you would like some weird and wonderful souvenirs, look no further than Bitaka Flea Market. From toys, jewellery and clothes to old photographs and vintage cameras, there’s something here for every type of shopaholic.
