Fans of ancient history will love planning a trip to Nîmes to take advantage of its rich collection of Roman sights. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the ideal choice when flying to the ‘French Rome’ from the north west of England as we currently offer regular flights from Liverpool to Nîmes with Ryanair.
Between the Mediterranean and the Cévennes Mountains, Nîmes was colonised by the Romans around 28 BC and has one of the largest collections of Roman artefacts in France.
Nîmes’s other big contribution to global culture is that it’s where a fabric known as serge de Nîmes was routinely worn by agricultural workers, and became better known to the rest of world as denim. An exhibition on this can be seen at the Musée du Vieux Nîmes which tells the history of the town.
Amongst the Roman remains in Nîmes are the Nîmes Arena – one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in France – and the Maison Carrée, which is one of the best preserved Roman temples in the world. The Jardins de Fontaine also house several Roman sights, including the 30 metre high Tour Magne. It was built in 15 BC and from the top you get panoramic views of the town.
Nîmes is also host to a variety of museums. In particular, the Musée des Beaux-Arts features an exquisite Roman mosaic that can be viewed from the first floor, while the Musée Archéologique has a collection of Roman tombs, mosaics and other artefacts from the era.
